previous - ABBA NOTICE OF MEETINGS

  • Christmas Get Together Saturday 10th December 2-4pm
Come along to our traditional Christmas Get Together. A Sausage Sizzle courtesy of the Catering Crew (Peter Russell and Mike Wade) at the Maylands Amateur Boatyard, 38 Hardy Rd, Maylands between 2 and 4 pm on Saturday, 10th December. Bring your family, enjoy each other❜s company. Grab something to eat and have a look at the amateur boat building in progress. Again all welcome to attend. I look forward to seeing you there.

  • Wednesday 7th December
Earlier in the year, Mike Nowland told us how to build a boat using pallet timber. At our next meeting we continue the theme of building boats from unconventional materials. Andrew Muhling has kindly agreed to give his presentation about building a boat from MDF at our evening meeting on Wednesday 7th December 7:00 pm for a 7:30 pm start in the Heritage Room at the South of Perth Yacht Club. Andrew has often built parts of a boat, but he has never built a whole boat. After doing some Googling I discovered it's likely nobody has explored the MDF boat thing. After reading how so many people thought it was a terrible idea, I wanted to try it for myself. Even if you don❜t plan to build an MDF boat. Come along and find out how Andrew achieved it. Anyone is welcome to attend our meetings. Just show up and you will be made welcome.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our June meeting at the last minute when our speaker caught Covid. Andrew Muhling has kindly agreed to give his presentation about building a boat from MDF at our evening meeting on Wednesday 7th December. Andrew has often built parts of a boat, but he❜s never built a whole boat. After doing some Googling I discovered it❜s likely nobody has explored the MDF boat thing. After reading how so many people thought it was a terrible idea, I wanted to try it for myself. Even if you don❜t plan to build an MDF boat, come along and find out how Andrew achieved it. Anyone is welcome to attend our meetings. Just show up and you will be made welcome. I look forward to catching up at the meeting.

  • Maritime Day - Saturday 29th October -Help Needed
Fremantle Ports are holding another Maritime Day on Saturday 29th October. ABBA have been asked to get involved. It is an opportunity to promote the Amateur Boat Builders Association and get more members. This helps us financially, but new members also have projects, contacts and ideas that helps ensure we continue to hold interesting and informative meetings and toolbox visits.
Due to problems with the B Shed floor, the event will be split over two locations, one indoor and one outdoor. ABBA has been allocated space inside the Fremantle Passenger Terminal. We will have some words and pictures of ABBA activities and projects on display and the opportunity to hand out ABBA brochures and offer discount memberships for people who sign-up on the day. We also have an outdoor space where we will proudly have two of our member❜s boats on display so the public can see what amateur boat builders can achieve.
We need some people to man (or woman) the stands for an hour of two. The more people who volunteer, the less time each of us needs to spend at a stand before going off to enjoy the other exhibits. Based on the last time we were involved, the volunteers enjoyed the time talking to the public and getting to know other ABBA members. Bring your family and friends and make a day of it. If you can spare some time, please contact Bruce Cadee at cadeefamily@bigpond.com or ph 0419 508 785.
On the day there will be a Wooden Boat Parade on the water of Fremantle Harbour. We have a few ABBA members❜ boats involved but if you have a wooden boat/ canoe of any size that you would like to sail, row or motor along between 11:00 am to 1:00 pm (staggered starts), also please let me know. I will need a photo and a few words about your vessel to produce an A4 poster which will be laminated and go on display for the public to read. See details in the e-mail below.

  • Sunday 6th November Toolbox Visit
A number of ABBA members are also members of the Bosun❜s Club at South of Perth Yacht Club. One of their activities is construction of two 22ft long, timber St Ayles Rowing Skiffs. Each boat accommodates four rowers and a cox. It is intended that the boat will be used for social and competitive events. Come along on Sunday 6th November from 2 to 4 pm at South of Perth Yacht Club and see the efforts of a group of very amateur boat builders.

  • Wednesday 5th October - 2022
The Heritage Room at South of Perth Yacht Club, 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start. The evening will start with another attempt at the Guinness World Record for the shortest AGM. The main event will be another Show-and-Tell which has proven to be one of our favourite and most popular meetings.
The floor is open to anyone who would like to get involved. We would love to hear about any boat related story. We all must have at least one. What have you learnt that other might benefit from? What has gone wrong that others could avoid? What went well? Maybe you have found a bargain, have had good service from someone or bought something that has saved you lots of time and effort. Have you been somewhere or seen something of interest to the rest of us? No matter what the story, I❜m sure we can all learn from each other❜s experiences. Feel free to bring along examples, props or pictures or just be prepared to speak for a few minutes. The night will be very informal and remember you are among friends. If you have many examples, don❜t feel that you are limited to just one. I❜m sure we will be keen to hear about them all.
If you have photos or videos that you would like to display on the screen during your talk, e-mail them to Bruce Cadee at cadeefamily@bigpond.com or call him on 0419 508 785 and he will make the necessary arrangements.

They have a Marine Division that specialises in engine sales, maintenance and repairs. Mikes talk will concentrate on the importance cooling and fuel systems and trouble-shooting diesel engines. ABBA have been asked to get involved. It is an opportunity to promote the Amateur Boat Builders Association and get more members. This helps us financially but new members also have new projects, contacts and ideas that helps ensure we continue to hold interesting and informative meetings and toolbox visits. ABBA participated a few years ago and small dingy that we had on display was very successful in attracting passers by and offering them an ABBA Brochure. It would be great if some of our Members would be prepared to have their pride and joy on display. At this stage, please give it some thought and if you are considering bringing your boat (of any material) please let me know as this will help the organisers allocate the available space. I will also be in touch closer to the event to sort out the details.

  • Save The Date - July Toolbox Visit
Our July Toolbox will be a visit to the premises of O Connor Wooden Boats, 12 Day Road, Rockingham, on Saturday 2nd July from 2 to 4 pm. Tony is a traditional boat builder specialising in the restoration and repair of wooden boats. Another part of his business is CNC machining of wooden kit boats. Simon Dixon's boat, pictured in the Grand Day Out article in the February March 2022 newsletter started as one of Tony's kits. There will be a number of cars travelling to Rockingham so why not share a ride. Contact Bruce Cadee if you would like a lift or are happy to take others.

  • Wednesday 1st June 7:00 pm for a 7:30 pm start in the Heritage Room at South of Perth Yacht Club.
Earlier this year we heard about building a boat from timber pallets. Continuing this unusual theme and thanks to a lead from ABBA member Bruce Uren, we have a presentation from Andrew Prior about building a boat from MDF. Andrew has often built parts of a boat, but he's never built a whole boat. After doing some Googling he discovered it's likely nobody has explored the MDF boat thing. After reading how so many people thought it was a terrible idea, he wanted to try it for himself". Even if you dont plan to build an MDF boat, come along and find out how Andrew achieved it. • Our next ABBA Toolbox will be on SUNDAY 1st May in the afternoon
  • The Old Gaffers Association are holding their Swan River Regatta on SUNDAY 1st May from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. ABBA President, Rob Bingham has generously invited us to follow and observe the regatta from Karrawa, the 1943 Halvorsen 38 ft Launch he restored.
